Growing up as a “sheep kid” in “cattle country” was a peculiar dilemma Hallie faced. With only a few producers to buy show sheep from in Routt County and all of the best lambs being shown by the producer’s children, the dream of winning the Routt County Fair seemed unrealistic. After ten years of showing sheep, Hallie now raises sheep of her own in hopes of helping others win a purple banner or just have tasty local lamb to eat.
Her sheep operation, known as “Solbakken Sheep” is located outside of Steamboat Springs, Colorado. The main focus is raising high-quality show lambs to be shown by 4H members and producing, fresh, grass-fed lamb to be sold to local consumers. Hallie’s priority is using regenerative grazing techniques to maintain a healthy and economically feasible flock while being honest and helpful to customers.
Black face show lambs are born in late February to mid-March and sold at two months of age before the first county fair weigh-in. Castration, docking of tails, vaccination, and administration of identification tags will take place prior to sale. Lambs are specifically bred to excel in the show ring and reach an optimum weight for northwest Colorado county fairs.
Lambs that are not sold in the spring are fed through the summer on privately owned grass pastures, then professionally processed and sold locally. The majority of the lamb is 100% grass-fed, however, grass-fed grain-finished lamb is available upon request. Lamb cuts are sold in half or whole carcasses, and select single cuts are available periodically.
